2nd Generation Intel Core, Visually Stunning

Intel recently announced at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) the introduction of the anticipated 2nd generation of the Intel Core series of processors. The chips are made on Intel’s 32nm manufacturing process on the company’s second-generation high-k metal gate transistors. These build technologies boost performance, reduce power consumption, and enable smaller designs at a lower overall manufacturing cost. Intel announced more than 20 processors, wireless adapters, and chipsets, including new additions to the widely popular Intel Core i7, i5 and i3 processors, Intel 6 Series Chipsets, and Intel Centrino WiFi and WiMAX adapters. Intel estimates that more than 500 laptop and desktop PC platform designs are expected from all major computer makers worldwide based on these new products.

The quad-core-based systems (four processors inside one chip) became available on Jan. 9 with additional dual-core versions in February. Video, benchmarks, photos and more details are available at www.intel.com/newsroom/CES.

The new series of processors touted many new features with one obvious theme, visual enhancement. The major upgrade to this family of chips is an on-board/integrated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) that enabled many new technologies to be included and/or improved. Some of the new features include Intel Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), Intel HD Graphics, Intel Wireless Display 2.0 (WiDi), and Intel Insider including collaborations with CinemaNow, Dixons Retail plc, Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, Image Entertainment, Sonic Solutions, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.

The Intel Quick Sync Video technology allows for transcoding of HD video to other formats to be much less time consuming. Intel claims that QSV can convert a four- minute HD video file on a laptop to an iPod compatible file in only 16 seconds.

Intel Wireless Display 2.0 or WiDi enables users to wirelessly “beam” videos up to 1080pHD as well as protected content either streaming from the Internet or played locally from a Blu-ray or DVD player to your high definition display.

“The new 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processors represent the biggest advance in computing performance and capabilities over any other previous generation,” said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager, PC Client Group, Intel. “The built-in visual capabilities enabled by these new processors are stunning. This, combined with improved adaptive performance, will revolutionize the PC experience in a way that is obvious for every user to see and appreciate – visibly smarter performance.”

Other new chip features include Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX), Intel® InTru™ 3-D, and Intel® Clear Video Technology HD. Intel InTru 3-D enables immersive stereoscopic 3-D to 3-D-capable HDTVs or monitors via HDMI 1.4, making movie excitement almost come out of the screen.

This geek loves it when new families of tech products are released. The only thing this geek loves more is when I can get my hands on them and put them to the test!
