Looking back at 2013

As the year comes to a close, it is common and also a good idea to look back on the past 12 months, and take stock of where we’ve been and make predictions about where we’re likely headed in the future.

2013 was not an easy year, with a typhoon in the Philippines, tension in Syria, a bombing in Boston, and continued global economic challenges. Yet, challenges can also bring opportunities.

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity,” as Albert Einstein’s famous quote goes. The military & aerospace (mil/aero) community rose up in the face of all the above challenges.

Taking these challenges one by one:

U.S. Marine Corps. personnel were among the first to respond to with aid typhoon victims in the Philippines thanks to the Bell Helicopter V-22 Osprey multi-mission, military tiltrotor aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities.

Various governments and militaries turned attentions to Syria, when tensions flared in 2013. Leaders, including those in the U.S., quickly took stock of air combat resources—including modern manned and unmanned aircraft—should the need to intervene arise.

Law-enforcement and homeland security officials were aided by forward-looking infrared (FLIR) imaging technology from FLIR Systems in Wilsonville, Ore. Deployed on a police helicopter, the FLIR device provided Massachusetts State Police personnel with their first glimpse of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect as he lay in a tarp-covered boat.

Challenging economic environments in the U.S. and Europe have contributed to military budget reductions; yet, the mil/aero market keeps growing and innovating (more on that in the next few blog posts).

This mil/aero geek loves this time of year and the opportunity it affords to take stock of all we’ve accomplished as a cohesive, mil/aero community.
